Types of prepared foods

There are three main types of prepared dog food to choose from today. In the past, canned food was by far the most widespread. This is usually predominantly meat based, and can be fed with a form of dry, biscuit-type ‘mixer.’ Canned foods have faded in popularity recently, being replaced by lightweight pouches of food that usually contain single meal portions and so do not need to be stored in a refrigerator. These ‘wet foods’ are usually preferred by most Border Terriers, although the breed is not generally fussy about its diet. Border Terriers will also readily eat dry ‘complete food,’ which represents a more concentrated ration, and so needs only be offered in relatively small amounts. It is very important, given the nature of this type of food, that fresh drinking water is always available. Never allow dry food to become wet in storage; it will become mouldy and will present a serious threat to the terrier’s health. Just as with wet foods, there are various life-stage options available in terms of dry diets, starting with puppy food and progressing to a senior ration.
